Nutrition Counseling/
Medical Nutrition Therapy
Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) is defined as an evidence-based medical approach to treating chronic diseases and conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes through the use of personalized nutrition plans. MNT is provided by a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) and act as part of a medical team, in various practice settings, such as hospitals, physician offices, private practice and other health care facilities.
Medical nutrition therapy is covered by a variety of insurance plans and is also referred to as ‘nutritional counseling'.

Why do we need Nutrition Counseling?
1. Diet and nutrition guidance is required for almost every chronic disease or condition.
According to the CDC, chronic diseases are defined broadly as conditions that last 1 year or more and require ongoing medical attention or limit activities of daily living or both. Chronic diseases such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes are the leading causes of death and disability in the United States. They are also leading drivers of the nation’s $3.8 trillion in annual health care costs.
And according to the NYS Department of Health, although common and costly, many chronic diseases are also PREVENTABLE. Many chronic diseases are linked to lifestyle choices that are within your own hands to change. Eating nutritious foods, becoming more physically active and avoiding tobacco can help keep you from developing many of these diseases and conditions. And, even if you already have diabetes, heart disease, arthritis or another chronic condition, eating more healthful food and getting more exercise, whether it's a brisk walk, a bike ride, a jog or a swim, can help you better MANAGE your illness, AVOID complications and PROLONG your life.
2. Nutrition counseling goes far more than simply giving nutrition advice.
A Dietitian who practices through a functional and integrative "lense", can provide you with more than just nutrition advice.
Integrative and functional nutrition utilizes a systems-based approach to evaluate the many interacting factors that promote health or disease. It seeks to understand the root causes of system(s) imbalances that influence one’s biology, genetics, nutritional status and well-being. Integrative and functional nutrition uses a holistic, multi-dimensional evidence and practice- based approach to the nutrition care process. A comprehensive nutrition assessment helps the practitioner design a personalized treatment plan, tailored to the patient’s unique needs and lifestyle to support the highest expression of health and healing. This integrated approach can dramatically improve patient outcomes and quality of life.
3. Reduce your health care costs
Preventing chronic disease and managing symptoms more efficiently can save you a lot of time, money, and may even save you from having to undergo invasive tests and procedures.
For example: Those who are prediabetic can prevent full blown diabetes with nutrition counseling.
